The 2022 issue of the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Journal (Vol. XXX, No. 2) was printed before Christmas and is now in the post to members.

This issue is devoted to a single article of great scholarship exploring ‘Named Land in the County of the Town of Drogheda 1266-1900’ by Ned McHugh. Following on from Ned’s Historic Town Atlas of Drogheda which was published by the Royal Irish Academy in 2019, this article deals with the local names of places, farms, fields and urbanised ground that existed in the town environs. These names will be familiar from the minutes of the Corporation, from old deeds and historical records etc. e.g. Culverhouse Park, Landsharragh, Cowleys, The Cord. In 150 pages, there are 16 maps including the example shown below, 22 photographs and almost 1800 footnotes. Each place is considered in terms of its location, its O.S. ITM coordinates, date of earliest known record, and historical proprietorship with commentary. This is a great complement to the Historic Town Atlas and will be an invaluable source for historians and genealogists.
