Dundalk Jail during the Civil War

Dundalk Jail during the Civil War

As part of the Decade of Centenaries 2012-2023 initiative, a booklet and short film have been produced by the Louth County Archives, in collaboration with the Society, which provide an authoritative account of the events leading up to the infamous ‘Hole in the Wall’ escape by Frank Aiken and over one hundred men from Dundalk Jail on 27 July 1922.

The booklet and the film were launched on 23 March 2022 at an event in the County Archives, which are housed in the old jail, by An Cathaoirleach, Councillor Pio Smith. Also speaking at the event were Joan Martin, CE of Louth County Council and the Society’s president, Donal Hall, who researched and wrote the script.

Full details and links to the booklet and the film can be found on the Louth County Archives website at www.louthcoco.ie/en/services/archives/louth-1916-1923/dundalk-jail-during-the-civil-war.html
