Our first Spring lecture for 2025 will be presented by Séamus Bellew and is titled Aspects of Heraldry in Drogheda and its Vicinity.
Heraldry is both an artform and a science which has long been used to represent individuals, families and institutions. It is rich in symbolism and provides a highly decorative record of both history and genealogy. In this talk, Séamus will look at the use of heraldry in Drogheda and its surrounds. He will discuss how and why heraldry was used and show how heraldry provides a rich source to understanding the history of an area and its inhabitants.
Séamus Bellew is a lecturer in DkIT. He has frequently published and spoken about heraldry, particularly that of Co. Louth. In addition to other published works, he is a regular contributor to the Society’s journal and also contributed a chapter about Drogheda’s heraldry for the Louth History and Society book published in 2023.
The lecture will be held online via Zoom on Thursday 20 March 2025 at 8.00p.m. The Zoom link will be emailed to members and posted on this page before the lecture.
