The Society invites you to join us on Wednesday 27th May at the Monasterboice Inn (Donegans, Eircode A92 A59E) in the Tower View Room at  7p.m. to acknowledge the contribution of past president Ned McHugh to the Society and to thank him for his long and dedicated service over forty-three years.

Ned first became a member of the council in January 1983. He served as 10th President of the Society from 2003-2006 inclusive. Over the years he contributed many articles to the Journal. The 2006 Journal consisted entirely of Ned’s article entitled ‘The Port of Drogheda 1790-1850: An era of Regeneration and Resurgence’. Again in 2022 the Journal consisted of his article ‘Named land in the County of the Town of Drogheda, 1266-1900: Farms, fields and urbanized ground’.

The Royal Irish Academy’s Irish Historic Towns Atlas No. 29: Drogheda / Droichead Átha was researched and compiled by Ned. It was launched on Tuesday 14 May 2019 at the High Lanes Gallery, Drogheda. This was followed by a lecture on Saturday 18 May, also in the High Lanes.

Ned was President during the Society’s centenary year in 2004 that was marked in various ways. Over the years, Ned gave many talks and actively participated, and contributed to many of the Society’s excursions and tours. He was always available at the end of a telephone line with wise counsel. He also helped draft many planning submissions. He was always very supportive to our long-time secretary and editor, Noel Ross. Ned contributed to, and gave advice relating to, the festschrift, presented to Noel in 2016.

The event honouring Ned’s many contributions will include a short presentation by Maura Mullen, a local author of many articles relating to the Drogheda area. This will be followed by some traditional musical entertainment.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will also be served.

We look forward to seeing members, friends and family of Ned on the 27th.
