Death and burial in Louth 8000 BC- AD 400

Death and burial in Louth 8000 BC- AD 400

The speaker for our third Spring lecture is Professor Gabriel Cooney, emeritus professor of Celtic Archaeology, School of Archaeology, University College Dublin. He is also a member of the Royal Irish Academy and has served on the Council of the RIA. Gabriel’s research interests focus on the Neolithic period, particularly the use of stone, and on mortuary practices in prehistory. He has authored, co-authored and co-edited a number of books, and published widely in academic journals and book chapters.

The richness of the mortuary record that we have for Irish prehistory is a highlight of the archaeological record for that eight thousand year span of  time (8000 BC- AD 400). This lecture will consider the changing patterns in the treatment of the dead of the earliest human generations who lived in the area of County Louth and how these relates to wider trends in Ireland.

Copies of Death in Irish prehistory, the recent book by Gabriel Cooney, Conor McHale (Illustrator), published by the Royal Irish Academy, will be available at the talk. Cost €30, payable in cash only. More details about the book can be found at at https://www.ria.ie/death-irish-prehistory.

The lecture will be held in the Boyne Valley Hotel (Eircode A92 EY89) on Thursday 25 April at 8 p.m.

All are welcome. Voluntary donations at the door are welcome to support the work of the Society.

The lecture will also be broadcast live. Details will be added here in advance of the lecture.
