In the second Autumn lecture, well-known local fiddle player Gerry O’Connor will present a lecture based on his 2018 publication of The Rose in the Gap: Dance Music of Oriel from the Donnellan Collection, an edited collection of traditional instrumental music from the South East Ulster area.
The talk will highlight the rich body of dance music that was in circulation in Counties Louth, Armagh, Monaghan and Cavan during the period of the Gaelic Cultural revival at the turn of the 20th century, and will describe the process of re-imagining and re-presenting this unique body of melodies now held in the archives of The National Folklore Collection at UCD. The lecture illustrations will include landscape images of the area and images of the original hand written manuscripts. Music from the collection will also be played.
